Mental wellbeing is not only what happens inside a person.
The problem
We treat emotional difficulty as a private malfunction.
Something has gone wrong inside this person, and it is their responsibility to correct it.
But distress rarely appears from nowhere. It grows in conditions — in insecurity, in isolation, in relentless pressure, in homes where feelings are not discussed, in communities where asking for help is read as weakness, in the ordinary experience of carrying something difficult with nobody to tell.
The question “what is wrong with you?” asks a person to account for their suffering. The question “what happened around you?” gives it a context. The second question is more accurate, and it is far more useful.
What we do
Make support ordinary, and closer than it is now.
- Create spaces where difficulty can be spoken about. Group and community settings where emotional experience is treated as ordinary rather than exceptional.
- Build awareness in schools and communities. Helping teachers, parents and community members recognise distress early — and know what to do when they see it.
- Reduce the distance to support. Most people who need help never reach it. We work on the practical barriers in between: knowing what exists, knowing it is acceptable to use it, and knowing where to go.
- Work with the people around the person. Family members, teachers and peers shape recovery far more than any single conversation with a stranger does.
- Normalise, without minimising. Wellbeing work should make support ordinary. It should never make anyone feel their difficulty is small.
